I suffered from a micro-managing team leader, and it was horrible.

It literally made me want to wish ill upon him.

And the worst thing? When I told him, it never crossed his mind that something with his behavior might not be accurate for his people.

I will keep this article handy, in case I will need it someday in the future :)

I can sympathize with both of you 😂😂

Today I found out I micromanaged without knowing. 😃

One "trick" that helped me was picking up more work (not that difficult if you're running your own company btw), and I simply had to trust people to deliver client work on time. It worked!

That's a good trick, it's very hard to micromanage when you don't have the time for it :)

I know. Genius move 😂

But careful! Some people will keep the micromanaging habit and be doing their regular work hours for their own work, and micromanaging other's work at 3 am.

That 3 am comment hurts more than a daylight comment 🤣

Hope they don't see this as going above and beyond 😂

Well written, @Anton! I've experienced micromanagement from both sides during my 15 years in tech. Sometimes, frequent updates are reasonably acceptable in a tight schedule when the scope is not flexible. I believe the nastiest micromanagement is when you don't explain the why, but you manage to explain precisely how someone should do some feature.

Thank you Bogdan. I agree, when people feel like they only ‘execute’, it can be a big drain on motivation.

Great Anton! I struggled with the same thing when started managing a more senior team.

Super useful, thanks, Anton! I'm currently in a battle to adjust to a new big project entering my workflow and so have completely dropped the ball on some lesser important projects that still need some level of work. Thanks for putting into practice Raviraj's advice and inspiring me to set aside 90 mins to tackle my dangling project's last ticket and then 30 mins to polish it!

Nice! Loved the narration in the beginning. I have strong urges of micro management too. So, I get it!

Super relevant. Often having too many good intentions backfires.

You wrote from the perspective of managers, but the same applies to engineers. Regardless of the title, even if we care a lot about the new hire or the interns' project, we need to let them explore without being on top of every move they make.
